About Indoor Tanning

Indoor tanning provides the ability to control exposure to UV light; this is not possible when tanning outdoors. Anti-tanning propaganda claims do not understand the goal of professional tanning salons.  Most credible research to date reveals that “sunburn”, not moderate tanning, is responsible for sun related skin disorders.  In reality, moderate tanning is your skin’s natural defense against sunburn.  It is our goal that NO ONE ever over exposes to ultra violet light

For clients that desire and can achieve a tan, indoor tanning allows for such on a controlled and regulated basis.  By controlling session time and frequency, and using sunscreen on exposed areas outdoors, you minimize the risk of getting a damaging sunburn.

Showbiz Tan is proud to be a member of the International Smart Tan network of professional salons.  Federal law prohibits us from saying that indoor tanning is “safe”; however, with our Smart Tan training and resources we can say that indoor tanning in moderation is Smart.  Our staff will be more detailed in your Skin Analysis and exposure time evaluations than most salons.  Many clients are not accustom to salon staff paying close attention to Skin Types, equipment selection, eyewear and session times ... we do because we care and do not want anyone to over expose.  Compared to others, our equipment is state of the art and very powerful.  It is also maintained regularly so the output of UV-light is greater than what many clients experience elsewhere.  Our lamps are changed well before the manufacturers recommendation (not when they burn out) and many salons would likely use the lamps we dispose of.

It is critical you use eyewear while tanning indoors.  Your eye lids have no pigment; they will burn not tan.  Closing your eyes does not protect them from UV damage.  A corneal burn is the most likely short-term damage characterized by increased sensitivity, burning and excessive tearing.  Long-term damage is worse and permanent!

A tan is your body’s natural method for UV protection.  Populations near the equator are darker and have skin types that tan easier because they have genetically developed this protection over generations.  Conversely, populations in northern areas have not developed much tanning ability because they are exposed to less UV light; colder climates and lower sun intensity (versus southern climates) limits their UV exposure.

The most common skin disorders from excessive UV exposure, basal and squamous cell skin cancer, are the most treatable and least dangerous of cancer types.

Melanoma is one of the most dangerous of all cancers.  As melanoma relates to tanning, please consider:

  1. Seventeen of 22 studies on melanoma and indoor tanning -- including the most recent and largest study -- have shown no statistically significant connection between indoor tanning and melanoma, and some have shown an inverse relationship.
  2. Melanoma is more common with INDOOR workers than outdoor workers. This would not be possible if the relationship were as straightforward as the anti-tanning lobby tries to make it seem.
  3. Melanoma occurs most frequently on unexposed parts of the body. Again, this would not be possible if the relationship between melanoma and indoor tanning were as straightforward as the anti-tanning lobby tries to make it seem.
  4. Melanoma mortality rates among women under 50, under 40, under 30 and under 20 have DECREASED in the past 30 years, according to the National Cancer Institute's own data. This would not be possible if melanoma incidence were truly increasing as indoor tanning popularity has increased over the same period.
  5. Older men are the highest increasing group for melanoma mortality; this group is the least likely to use indoor tanning. The United States Food and Drug Administration's Center for Devices and Radiological Health, which regulates and conducts research on indoor tanning, has stated officially that no data exist to causatively connect indoor tanning with melanoma skin cancer.
